Users Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a leading health publication points out that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing such medications should be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the drugs explains the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful return of hunger.

"It felt as if something activating and I was suddenly ravenous," described one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural management.
